Artist News: Matthew Rose

Matthew Rose’s exhibition, Overdose in Canton, Ohio at Strauss Studios is exactly that. In a good way. With at least one thousand works on the walls, in bins, and on tables, sorting and organizing is pretty much out of the question. Finding incredible saturated semantic collages and paintings is possible though. Much of the work was made in the mid aughts around 2006. The exhibition is up until April 14th.

Just released last week is Matthew Rose’s quarterly art magazine Trouble that he produces with editing partner, artist and designer, Jamie Newton. Trouble is available free as a download or you can order the print version for a bit of price. Trouble is now in its second year and the newly released Music issue includes, writing by: Matthew Rose, Larry Jaffee, Christopher Mooney, Joseph Nechvatal,
Michael Frank, Camille Moreddu, Jody Jenkins, Ben Yetts, John MacFarlane, Thomas Brun, MJ Yetts and art by:
Ricardo Bloch, Rob Miles, Crank Sturgeon, Lene de Montaigu, Jamie Newton, Alexander Limarev, Jeff Ross, Museum of Bad Art, Cecil Touchon, Chris Davis, and Christian Marclay.

Matthew is not a sleeper. He stays up until the wee hours of the night — you can generally catch him until about 3am Paris time — as that’s where he’s lived since 1992. Aside from making art work every day, Mr. Rose plays mandolin and guitar and spends a good part of his days playing along the Seine with other musicians. Blue grass. He’s also a seasoned writer, having written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Art & Antiques, Modern Painter and many critical art essays for Artblog.

Rose has also initiated several viral projects over the years, including: A Book About Death inspired by his friendship with Ray Johnson.

He is the author of several books of art work including, People (Red Fox Press, 2015), Weekend Plans (Blurb, 2016), evidence (Burning Boy Books, 2017), The Self Improvement Alphabet (Red Fox Press, 2018), Coronaville (Blurb, 2020).
