Violet Webster
Fuzzy 2023
Acrylic on wood board
7” x 12”
Violet Webster lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by the cornucopia seen in urban concrete, she seeks the “human stain” that blemishes the streets. Piss, industrial paint stains, and any other form of human excrement serve as inspiration for the mixture of loose brushwork and pooled muted color that she uses as a backdrop for effervescent tangles of graffiti. Layers of detached and repressed unconsciousness are manifested in movements on Webster’s bed of muted greys and webs of cracks. The illegible gesticulations of paint pull us into a narrative that started long before we were born. Graffiti is a primordial hieroglyph, an umbilical cord laid out horizontally on a bed of mud. Webster bends the idea of line and color to create the dissonant beauty stemming from the unintentional.
